Goal Keeping
Richard Reece, Director of Goalkeeping
Richard Reece is the Goalkeeping Director for Emerald City this is a position
he took on in 2005 during that time the program has produced 5 GK's onto
Regional ODP Pools, a further 6 onto WA State ODP and with the current U18
GK's graduating will have developed 6 GK's into College Soccer.
Reece will begin his forth season as the University of Washington Men's
goalkeeping coach in 2008.
Reece, a native of Cullercoats, England, has mentored UW goaltenders Chris
Eylander and Rylan Hawkins, both of whom have etched their names in the
Husky record books under his tutelage.
He holds every attainable license offered in the US. He currently holds
the USSF "A" coaching license, a USSF National Goalkeeping License,
a USSF Youth license, a NSCAA Premier Diploma, a NSCAA Advanced National
Goalkeeping Diploma and the UEFA "B" license and is currently
in the process of attaining his UEFA "A", which is recognized
as the most prestige coaching license in the world.
In addition to his duties at Emerald City FC and UW, Reece is a NSCAA National
staff instructor and the NSCAA State Technical Director for Washington.
Reece is a Staff Coach for the Region IV Olympic Development program and
the Head Coach for the Boy's Washington ODP, as well as the head
coach of the '93 ODP team. He is also the owner and director of Elite Goalkeeper/Goalscoring
Academies.
Reece came to Seattle from Houston, Texas, where he had been the Assistant
Girls DOC and the Director of Goalkeeping for the Eclipse Soccer Club since
2001. While coaching in Houston, Reece mentored goalkeepers on youth national
and All-American teams. Reece also ran the goalkeeping programs for
both South Texas ODP and the STYSA coaches education department.
A standout goalkeeper himself, Reece spent six years playing professional
and semipro soccer including stints with Stevenage Boro, Gateshead FC, Cambridge
United, Blyth Spartans, Lincoln City and Sunderland FC.

Brian Schmetzer - Director of Competition

coach of the Seattle Sounders in the A-League. In 2002, he was voted coach of
the year for guiding the team to a record of 23-4-1, the second best record in
A-League history.
Playing Experience: His youth club team won 7 of 10 State
Championships, and he played on various State and Regional teams. His pro career
began is 1980 with the Seattle Sounders in the NASL. He played indoor soccer in
the Major Indoor Soccer League with the Tacoma Stars, St. Louis Storm and the
San Diego Sockers, with whom he won three national titles. His 15-year career
included being a MISL All-Star. He finished his playing career with the
Sounders, then the Seattle SeaDogs of the C.I.S.L. and helped the SeaDogs to
another national championship.
Personal: Brian Schmetzer was born, raised and learned soccer in
Seattles first family of soccer. Brains father, Walter, pioneered youth soccer
in our area. Brian has been coaching kids since he was 15, when his family

WIAA state berths including 3rd and 4th place finishes. Has been Director
of Goalkeeper at club level for several years. Also worked as a Region IV
staff coach and WSYSA ODP coach and goalkeeper trainer. Recently received
the US Soccer National GK License.
Playing Experience: Drafted Major league Soccer (MLS) by DC United
and was on 1996 MLS Cup squad, also was with New England Revolution and NY/NJ

in A-League. Trained with professional teams in Holland at AJAX Amsterdam
& Vitesse Arnhem, in Sweden with Hammarby IF, AIK Stockholm and in England
West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Luton and Cheltenham. Played
college soccer at Indiana University on 1988 NCAA Division One National Championship
team and at Wake Forest University on Atlantic Coast Conference Championship
