General Information About Tryouts

Emerald City FC teams are formed by open tryouts in the spring, typically the weekend after state cup competition has concluded for each respective age group. U-11 and U-12 age groups will be in April 2010, and the balance will be held in May 2010. Sign up HERE to be notified when dates have been set and registration is opened.
Usually there are at least two tryout sessions for each age group. Players should attend as many of the sessions as possible, and notify the coach if they are unable to attend any of them. Players are expected to play in their age group. Rare exceptions may be made for players of exceptional ability to "play up," typically only if that allows them to play with others in their same school grade. "Playing up" requires permission from a club coaching director.

It is not easy to make an Emerald City team, but if you have ability, dedication and a personal commitment to succeed both on and off the field, we would love to see you at our tryouts!

Our tryouts are held in the spring of each year, but occasionally, teams have openings during the season as well. If you are interested in joining a team, please contact the appropriate coach.

We hope to see you in the Spring!

What can I expect at tryouts?

A parent or legal guardian will be asked to complete a medical release and some brief information about the player. Players will be given a numbered jersey or t-shirt which the coaches use to keep track of them. A picture will be taken of the player with the numbered jersey in order for coaches to use later when they are deliberating over the final selection. Other than that, the tryouts are basically like any other soccer practice. There will be some small sided games, skills drills, etc. Players are encouraged to have fun and play without any fear of being selected or not selected.

How many players do you select?

Each team has 12 to 18 players, depending on the age group (U11 teams will be on the smaller side with 12 to 14 players because they play mod 9 vs. 9). Fielding at least two teams per age group is optimal for the players and coaches as it gives plenty of opportunities for combined practices, scrimmages, and the like.
